Ronnie James Dio Tribute (2010)
Featuring Tony Iommi, Vinny Appice, and Geezer Butler
Dio's journey with BLACK SABBATH began in 1980 when he replaced Ozzy Osbourne, recording the iconic "Heaven And Hell" and "Mob Rules" albums, as well as "Live Evil", before departing in 1982. He rejoined the group a decade later for the album "Dehumanizer", and once again collaborated with the band under the HEAVEN & HELL banner in 2006. HEAVEN & HELL released their highly acclaimed album "The Devil You Know" in 2009.
Tragically, Ronnie passed away from stomach cancer on May 16, 2010, at the age of 67.
Dio's impact on heavy metal is undeniable. He was recognized worldwide as one of the greatest and most influential vocalists in the genre's history. The singer was diagnosed with cancer in late 2009, and despite undergoing chemotherapy, he made his final public appearance in April 2010 at the Revolver Golden Gods Awards in Los Angeles.
Ronnie's long-awaited autobiography, "Rainbow In The Dark: The Autobiography", was released in July 2021 by Permuted Press.
In 2006, BLACK SABBATH members Dio, Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Vinny Appice reunited to record three new songs for Rhino's "Black Sabbath: The Dio Years", followed by a highly acclaimed world tour under their new name, HEAVEN & HELL.
"The Devil You Know" made a strong impact, selling 30,000 copies in its first week of release in May 2009, debuting at No. 8 on The Billboard 200 chart.
In a 2022 interview with Metal Talk, Iommi shared his thoughts on Dio:
"It was really sad [when he died] because we were on a roll with the debut HEAVEN & HELL album, 'The Devil You Know', and we were touring and loving it. I remember talking to Ronnie in Japan. We went for dinner one night, and we said, 'Let's not plan for five years; let's just see where it goes.' So we did the tour, loved it, and enjoyed it. In a restaurant, I asked Ronnie if he fancied doing more, and he said, 'Yeah, let's do another album and tour.' That was the plan. But, of course, Ronnie didn't make it. It was going so well, and we had a great time together. We loved working with each other."
In an April 2021 interview with Rockin' Metal Revival, Iommi reflected on his time with Dio:
"The last tour with Ronnie was precious, and we had such a great time. We really bonded. The last generation with Ronnie was really close — everybody was close. Ronnie was such a nice person. What I liked about Ronnie is that he gave everyone time. Before the show, he'd have people in his dressing room, and he'd talk and drink with them. He never warmed up; he'd just walk on stage and sound unbelievable. His voice was spot-on. It was amazing how he could do that. He was a really nice, caring character. He'd call me, even from the hospital just before he passed. It was very sad, but he thought a lot of everyone and loved his fans."
