A Political Earthquake Rocks Siaya: ODM Faction Unleashes Fury on Governor Orengo!
On a recent Saturday, the political landscape of Siaya town was set ablaze as the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party's Linda Ground brigade convened a fervent rally. This wasn't just any gathering; it was a direct, no-holds-barred assault on Governor James Orengo and a rival faction known as the Linda Mwananchi. The air crackled with accusations and defiance as key figures within the ODM, led by Dr. Oburu Oginga, vociferously challenged the direction of the party and its role within the current government.
The core of the contention? A perceived betrayal of the party's foundational principles. Dr. Oburu Oginga, alongside ODM Chairperson Gladys Wanga, emphatically stated that the late party leader Raila Odinga had strategically positioned ODM within the broad-based government. They pledged to uphold this vision, even going so far as to signal an openness to a pre-election pact with President William Ruto's United Democratic Alliance (UDA). This is where things get particularly interesting – a potential alliance that might surprise many!
But here's where it gets controversial... The Linda Ground brigade didn't mince words. They accused the splinter group, reportedly spearheaded by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, and Governor Orengo himself, of actively working to undermine the party's standing in the broader governmental structure. Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi voiced his support for Dr. Oburu Oginga's initiative to engage in formal discussions with UDA, aiming to forge a pre-election coalition agreement with President Ruto. He stated, "Mimi naunga mkono juhudi ya Oburu Oginga ya kuanzisha mazungumzo kirasmi na chama cha UDA ili tuunde pre-election coalition agreement na Rais William Ruto."
And this is the part most people miss... The rally painted a grim picture of the situation in Siaya, with speakers lamenting the perceived absence of their elected Governor. "In Siaya, we have had many issues. We elected a Governor, but he is now missing in action. Our Governor has left Siaya and is now moving around outside the county, so as Siaya people we now have to decide on the way forward," one speaker declared, highlighting a deep sense of abandonment felt by some constituents.
The rally was a star-studded affair, drawing a formidable lineup of Members of Parliament, Senators, Governors, and Cabinet Secretaries. Among them were Treasury CS John Mbadi, Mining CS Hassan Joho, and the aforementioned Energy CS James Opiyo Wandayi. These prominent figures didn't just attend; they directly leveled accusations against Governor Orengo, alleging a deliberate plot to dismantle the ODM party. This escalated tensions within the party to a fever pitch.
Ruaraka MP TJ Kajwang delivered a particularly pointed message to the Governor: "The Governor of Siaya, I am a heartbeat away from your office, and you have abdicated your office and gone to Kakamega. You’re saying ‘Ruto must go’ and Siaya people are telling you ‘Orengo must go.’" Similarly, Ugenya MP David Ochieng warned, "We want to tell Orengo today, you cannot use an old map to get to new places. We want to tell Orengo today that he must come back home and work for us; if not, he will not see the light of day tomorrow."
The speakers consistently declared an all-out campaign to thwart Governor Orengo's re-election aspirations in 2027, rallying supporters with the clear message: "he must go home." Gem MP Elisha Odhiambo went as far as to urge Siaya MCAs to initiate impeachment proceedings, stating, "I want Siaya MCAs to impeach Orengo next week. Orengo must go. We’re behind the broad-based government, and we’re going to give President Ruto a second term."
The Linda Ground brigade unequivocally pledged their solidarity and unity under Dr. Oburu Oginga's leadership. They urged ODM supporters to decisively reject the Linda Wananchi faction, positioning themselves as the true inheritors of the ODM's legacy and the guardians of its future.
Now, I'm curious to hear your thoughts! Do you believe that forging pre-election pacts with opposing parties, like the one suggested with UDA, strengthens a party or dilutes its core identity? And what are your views on the accusations leveled against Governor Orengo regarding his commitment to Siaya and the ODM party? Let us know in the comments below – we'd love to hear your perspective!
