Winter Storm Alert: Stay Put and Stay Safe!
Ohio is bracing for a major winter storm this weekend, and state officials are urging residents to avoid travel due to potentially hazardous conditions. With low temperatures and challenging snow removal ahead, it's a recipe for treacherous roads.
But here's where it gets controversial: while state agencies are doing their best to prepare, the effectiveness of their efforts may be limited by the cold. Salt, a common de-icing method, becomes less potent below 20 degrees, so ODOT is turning to additives for help. This could mean longer wait times for cleared roads after the storm passes.
ODOT crews will be out in full force, pre-treating routes and working tirelessly to keep roads passable. However, the dangers of winter driving persist, as evidenced by the number of incidents involving snowplows being struck by vehicles.
"Our drivers are dedicated to keeping you safe," says Pamela Boratyn, ODOT Director. "But we need your cooperation too. Drive cautiously, give our crews space, and put your phone away."
And this is the part most people miss: winter driving isn't just about the snow. It's about adapting your driving habits to the conditions. Colonel Charles A. Jones, superintendent of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, emphasizes the importance of safe speeds and following distances. With 22% of winter crashes attributed to unsafe speed, it's a critical factor in road safety.
So, what can you do to prepare? Winterize your vehicle with essential items like an ice scraper and jumper cables. If you do get stuck, turn on your hazards, stay put, and call for help.
ODOT and the Ohio State Highway Patrol are urging the public to prioritize safety over travel during this storm. It's a simple message, but one that could save lives.
Stay tuned for more updates, and remember: when in doubt, stay off the roads!
